Sensory processing is our ability to take in outside information through our senses in order to make sense of the world around us. When there is a disruption within this process children can have trouble engaging in and completing everyday tasks.
If your child experiences a disruption within their sensory system, you may notice food selectivity, defensiveness towards textures, and mealtime breakdowns, making them a candidate for feeding therapy. Your child may also be a candidate for feeding therapy if you notice difficulties with chewing, swallowing, and/or pocketing foods.
Fine motor skills are essential, underlying skills that a child needs to be able to write. If a child has messy handwriting, complains of hand pain, or lacks motivation to participate in fine motor tasks, such as drawing or coloring, they may require additional support to develop these primary skills.
At ComPed, we understand the importance of play. Our services are child directed through play, with embedded opportunities to practice higher level skills. During our sessions we focus on parent education and coaching. Improving your ability to play with your child helps build relationships, communication, and regulatory skills necessary for your child to interact and perform.
Self-regulation is the ability to appropriately respond to the ongoing demands experienced in daily life. Do you notice that your child has breakdowns during transitions, fun family events or outings, or whenever you place an age appropriate demand on them? At ComPed we use a play-based approach with embedded strategies to help your child develop better regulatory skills.
Problem-solving is a child’s ability to identify a problem and develop solutions. At ComPed we work to improve problem-solving through a play-based approach that challenges your child's higher level processing in order to manage or solve difficult situations.
Attention is your child’s ability to concentrate on one activity or task at a time. At ComPed we use sensory-based strategies to prolong attention to tasks that your child struggles with.
Social skills are the skills we use to interact with other people. Social skills encompass verbal and non verbal communication such as body language and gestures. Does your child often miss social cues, opportunities, or have difficulties initiating and sustaining friendships? At ComPed we work with children of a variety of ages to strengthen these skills.
